What If the Internet was Governed?

Right now there are heavy talks about Protect IP Act which is a bill that is going through the Senate, this bill is being backed by the RIAA, Movie industry and other media owning outlets. In this article I will be describing to you what this bill could mean to you. If you are a creator of web content, a blogger, a person who creates YouTube video’s singing remakes of artist music. This bill has some tremendous stopping power and it gives it all to the US Government, and the music and movie industry. Yes that’s right the movie and music industry. They are telling the government that the reason the industry is losing out on so much money is due to online piracy, and they want it stopped so they can make more money on their movies and music sales.

So let’s think about the music industry for a second, is there really a music industry anymore? No because so many people have gone the indie route by producing and creating their own mini labels and starting through YouTube by releasing their own music. If Protect IP Act succeeds then these indie artists will not have a chance due to the major record labels shutting them down for potential copyright infringement and intellectual property. So this mean’s we wouldn’t  have Justin Beiber, Grayson Chance, The Shaytards, Dave Days, CTFxC, iJustine and other Youtubers would never have been able to get noticed and make their way into the internet stardom because the owner of the things they are creating parodies of would have contacted the government and had them removed from the internet, or make them pay a fine to the owners of the item.

The movie industry does have a foot to stand on when it comes to online piracy, as movies are among the most pirated items on the internet. It is in 3rd place behind software and music. But this could easily be combated by giving incentives to movie goers/ purchasers by including a digital copy with every purchase of a dvd/bluray disc. So people wouldn’t need to resort to stealing movies from the internet, and another thing that would help them out could be the rate they are charging movie theaters to rent their movies so they would not have to pass the charge onto the consumer. The rates they charge the cinemas keep going up and up, and in turn people are starting to wait for disc releases to purchase a movie by this time the reviews have already come out for the movie and they lose out on even more revenue. I know when it comes to movies in theaters I will not spend my money on something unless it has been out for a couple of weeks so I can get a feel of what other people think of the movie. So I can decide if I am wasting my money or not. So I think it is not the internet that is actually causing the movie industries problems, but the industry it self.

Here is what Wikipedia says about Protect IP Act

The PROTECT IP Act defines infringement as distribution of illegal copies, counterfeit goods or anti-DRM technology, and infringement exists if “facts or circumstances suggest [the site] is used, primarily as a means for engaging in, enabling, or facilitating the activities described”. The bill says it does not alter existing substantive trademark or copyright law.

The bill provides for “enhancing enforcement against rogue websites operated and registered overseas”, and authorizes the United States Department of Justice to seek a court order in rem against websites dedicated to infringing activities themselves, if through due diligence an individual owner or operator cannot be located. The bill requires the Attorney General to serve notice to the defendant. Once the court issues an order, it could then be served on financial transaction providers, Internet advertising services, Internet service providers, and information location tools to require them to stop financial transactions with the rogue site and stop linking to it.  The term “information location tool” is borrowed from the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and is understood to refer to search engines, but could cover other sites that link to content.

The Protect IP Act says that an “information location tool shall take technically feasible and reasonable measures, as expeditiously as possible, to remove or disable access to the Internet site associated with the domain name set forth in the order”. In addition, it must delete all hyperlinks to the offending “Internet site”.

Nonauthoritative domain name servers would be ordered to take technically feasible and reasonable steps to prevent the domain name from resolving to the IP address of a website that had been found by the court to be “dedicated to infringing activities.” The website could still be reached by its IP address, but links or users that used the website’s domain name would not reach it. Also search engines—such as the already protesting Google—would be ordered to “(i) remove or disable access to the Internet site associated with the domain name set forth in the [court] order; or (ii) not serve a hypertext link to such Internet site.” Furthermore, trademark and copyright holders who have been harmed by the activities of a website dedicated to infringing activities would be able to apply for a court injunction against the domain name to compel financial transaction providers and Internet advertising services to stop processing transactions to and placing ads on the website, but would not be able to obtain the domain name remedies available to the Attorney General.

I would encourage you to write your Senator and recommend they do not vote for the Protect IP Act as it will take away your 1st Amendment rights on the internet and give the control over to the Music and Movie industry.

Online Privacy, and What You Need To Know!

In the modern age of the Internet, online privacy is a big topic. I am going to discuss a few things that I think can be helpful for everyone who uses the internet. It has been said once you have posted something on the internet it is searchable for ever, so it is best to think about things you will be posting. I have taken the stance where everything I post online must be work safe meaning it is something I can discuss with everyone with out offending anyone on purpose. You will always have people who get offended by the little things, those are things you will have to work around if they come up. Another aspect of online privacy are pictures you upload online, this pertains to people who go to parties and get pictures of them with alcoholic drinks, the FTC has given it’s stamp of approval for a background checking company to be able to use what ever it finds on the internet and supply it to whom ever is performing a background check on you. This means it will scrape the internet and find things associated with your name and it hits all of the important places Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, blogs and many other social media sharing sites. If you only share things that are work safe and not offensive to people you will have nothing to worry about.

Hey That’s Not Right!

If you think this is an invasion of privacy you are not the only one, the sad thing there is nothing you can do about it. If it has been published on the internet and is public it is free game according to the FTC and Federal Courts. But there are ways to combat how your information is shared and it is up to you to make sure it is set up the correct way. Most sites like Google, and Facebook will set everything up as PUBLIC unless you change the settings, so you will need to investigate what and how you are sharing when you sign up for these services.

Another way to stay ahead of the privacy game is to ensure you read the Privacy Policies of the sites you are using, they are legally obligated to tell you how they intend to use your information and data. If you do not agree with what you see you have the option to delete your account or not continue to register for the site. When you sign up for a site you have to agree to their terms of service, and this always has their privacy settings listed in it, and you are required to read them before submitting your registration for the site. This is most often the little check box you check with out actually reading the Terms of Service, which can come back to hurt you in the future if you do not fully read the terms. Apple once had in their iTunes terms of service that iTunes was not to be used to aide in the creation of nuclear devices and biological weapons (iTunes TOS Fail)

Usernames, Passwords and Credit Card Information

Your username states a lot about you, if you choose ismokeweed420 it will be tied to your name for ever and unless you want to be known as a druggie to your future employers then more power to you. By sticking with your name or a sudo name that is work friendly you will do fine. I use 3 user names joshcombs, joshua.combs or cincygeek they are all user friendly and allow the proper image to be shared of my name.

Passwords are something everyone should be serious about, have you heard about people being hacked and their Facebook,Twitter profiles being stolen to share private information or say malicious things? It could be stopped by using a proper password, most people have common passwords like puppy, myname, 123456. They are easily guessable and there have been programs written to crack simple passwords. It is called a brute force password generator/cracker. What it does is it keeps guessing passwords that are common until it gets to the common one you may have used. This is why you should always change your passwords every 90 days and never try to use the same password for multiple sites as if an intruder does gain access to one of your accounts they do not gain access to all of your accounts. Also the password structure it self is very important. Having one or more capital letter in your password along with numbers will take longer and I will show you an example of what a good password looks like. Lets use MyPassWord2011 for our example it would take 40.08 centuries for someone to crack it according to Steve Gibson’s Brute Force Password Calculator. But if we use the password of password it will take only .00217 seconds to break through the password because all of the letters are lower case, and if we change the p to an uppercase it will change it to .545 seconds and if we add a zero to it, the time for a cracking scenario is 2.29 minutes. The main thing to take away from this is the more complex your password is, the longer it will take someone to crack it. If it is not something they can overcome in a few minutes they will give up.

I encourage you to test your own password and make the changes to it if you are not using a secure password. (GRC PassWord Calculator)

Online Purchases have become standard practice since the internets inception, if you are using the password strategies that we have discussed above you will not have any issues, but if you are using a easily guessed password for the accounts that you have your credit cards associated with you are the only one to blame, unless the company has a breach like Sony, TJ Max, and other similar companies have had in the past.

Twitter and Curating Your Streams!

As you may remember in my last post about  What is Twitter and What Can My Business Do With It? I showed you how to get started with Twitter and how to grow your followers and how to properly use Twitter. I have been rethinking what I have posted and would like to share some of the thoughts that I have been rethinking. Today’s post will be reviewing how to curate who you follow, and how you can be successful in what you share on Twitter. I will also be sharing some of the tools to use for Twitter and various other social media platforms.

You have now been tweeting your thoughts, helping others by sharing information from the people you follow via the retweet options. Generally how I gain my followers are to follow people who interest me, or are posting about the topics that interest me. For me the topics I tend to follow are tech news, website design news, and other tech related information. I retweet all of the valuable information that I believe is shareable with my followers, and by doing this I have the opportunity to have my retweet, retweeted by my followers and in turn that would get me introduced to more people who may be interested in all of the things that I am posting about and then follow me.

The main purpose of this post, should you follow everyone who follows you? I am starting to curate the people who I follow, so I can have a great amount of posts to sift through for the latest topics that I am interested in, and then share it to my followers. If I were to just follow everyone who were to follow me, I would get a lot of followers who have nothing worthwhile for me and my topics that I follow.

Tools that I have used to monitor my social media streams,

1. Hootsuite – There are two levels of membership to Hootsuite, the Free user can have 5 streams enabled, and the available social media platforms that can connect to Hootsuite. Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and FourSquare. With the premium account you can add as many streams that you would like, and you also have access to reports on your social media engagement and followers.

2. TweetDeck – You can monitor your Twitter feeds, and Facebook feeds.

3. Klout – this service allows you to use your Twitter account and allows you to find out what kind of Twitter user you are and your reach of followers.

What is Twitter and What Can My Business Do With It?

Twitter is a micro blogging website that allows it’s users to post 160 characters of text to share your thoughts on what ever you want to share with the world. Businesses have taken the opportunity to use this platform to grow their business. I want to make sure everyone knows that you should not really be advertise your company on Twitter directly, but answer questions and become a trusted guru by answering questions. If you help people with their problems that they are having they will go to your profile and then follow your Twitter account and be more likely to check out your companies website and then check out your services.

How to get started on Twitter

Many users find it fun or exciting to contribute their own content to Twitter (we call this “tweeting”). If you’re one of them, here are some good ways to get started posting your own Tweets. People you know and people you are interested in what you have to say may follow you and they’ll see all the Tweets you share with them.

1. BUILD A VOICE: retweet, reply, react

Use existing information (other people’s Tweets) on Twitter to find your own voice and show others what you care about. Retweet messages you’ve found and love, or @reply with your reaction to a Tweet you find interesting. Tip: If you’re a new user, others are more likely to find your messages if they are retweets or replies.

2. MENTION: include others in your content

Once you’re ready to begin authoring your own messages, consider mentioning other users by their Twitter username (preceded by the @ sign) in your Tweets. This can help you think of what to write, will draw more eyes to your message, and can even start a new conversation. Try posting a message mentioning a celebrity or person you admire – they often respond to fans. You’ll see their response on your Mentions tab. Tip: Can’t think of anything to write? Don’t worry! Like I said, the real magic lies in locating and reading content on Twitter.

3. GET FANCY: explore advanced features

As you become more engaged on Twitter, others will begin to find and follow you. Once you’re familiar with Twitter basics, consider exploring the site’s more advanced features: lists, direct messages, and favorites. Learn how to include photos or videos in your Tweets, or consider connecting your Twitter account to your your blog, Facebook, or website to show off your updates across the web. Tip: The best way to gain followers on Twitter is to regularly engage and contribute in a meaningful way.

4. Follow People With the Same Interests: find people with the same interests

Follow people who are prominent in your field of interest. So if you are interested in Technology then you would choose Leo Laporte, Robert Scobile, Bill Gates and other tech influencer’s.

I will be posting in another article about Cool Twitter and Social Media Management Tools, so please subscribe to the RSS feed to stay on topic!

Why is a LinkedIn profile important?

I figured with LinkedIn going public tomorrow. Today would be a great time to post the reasons you need a LinkedIn profile, and what you should include on it. If you make a profile on LinkedIn you will open yourself up to a professional network that can help you in a future job search. Most HR departments are actively searching LinkedIn to find new talent for open positions.

  • Find past coworkers: You may be new in your career as a sales professional or maybe a veteran, either way, LinkedIn will help you keep the connections and friends you make at work only a mouse click away. Sure you have their contact information already but you can lose your computer or delete the record on accident. LinkedIn lets you keep people in a digital address book that makes sure you dont lose contact. Your address book wont keep you up to date on the latest happenings with your coworkers either.
  • Build your online identity: Your profession more dependent on your online identity than ever before. If you are serious about becoming a sales leader or expert, without you sales 2.0 career personal brand being stamped in cement you will be facing an uphill battle. There are many things you should do to make sure your personal brand is front and center but having an well crafted and interactive LinkedIn profile is the best place to start.
  • Get new opportunities: People use LinkedIn to find recommendations on products/services. From the LinkedIn Groups to the Answers page, thousands of people a day are looking for help making decisions. As a sales person you should be in these groups or at least setting up email alerts so you can scan the groups to see if you can offer some help and create a new opportunity.
  • Learn something new: As a professional you should spend a portion of your day getting better educated on your industry or the latest sales trends. LinkedIn is a focal point for these types of discussions and you have the ability to tap into a network of experts that can help guide you through some of the obstacles you face in your sales efforts.
  • Get some credibility: This goes along with #2 but in more detail. As you get more experience, you should be helping other professionals by answering questions.  As you help people even if its only a couple times a week you will see your profile being looked at by more and more people. Your prospects are looking at your LinkedIn profile. Make sure you update your LinkedIn profile and give your prospects an excellent representation of who you are.
  • Become an expert: The quickest way to get and grow your credibility is to become a social selling expert. The ability to be seen by millions of LinkedIn users trying to make decisions will help build your credibility to the point you are the go to person when it comes to getting help. This could be one of the most influential moves you could make to build your career into exactly what you want it to be.
  • Grow your pipeline: Speaking from experience, LinkedIn is a great way for you to take your sales career to another level. As you build your network, become an expert in your space and build your personal brand, you will find more people coming to you for help related to your product or service. This will create a snow ball effect and eventually people from all over LinkedIn will be singing your praises and driving more leads to you.
  • Help out a friend: Let’s face it, these are some tough times when it comes to finding a job. Being on LinkedIn will let you connect people you know with others in your network that may be looking for some new talent. You can be the connector that brings someone out of unemployment or maybe you will need to tap into your network when you are looking for a job. Either way, LinkedIn helps facilitate this process easily.
  • Find a new job: The job board on LinkedIn is more likely to land you a new position than Monster.com. Because your job inquiry will be directly linked to your LinkedIn profile, employers and hiring managers will be able to quickly decide if you are the right person to talk to. The search features in LinkedIn jobs is one of the best I’ve seen and should be used if you are looking for a new place to work.
  • Get found by a new job: Recruiters make up for a decent chunk of people on LinkedIn along with hiring managers. Even if you are not actively looking for a new gig, here may be companies out there looking for someone with your exact talents. They run searches based on expertise, interests, past company and other identifiers that all lead them to your LinkedIn profile. This is more of a reason to make sure your LinkedIn profile is up to date and that you are seen is the most positive light possible.
  • Get recommendations from clients and co-workers: You can get recommendations/references to post right on your profile and you can share them to future employers and future clients. The main purpose of these recommendations are to let people know how we perform at your current role or the role that you once held.
  • How to get more hits on your LinkedIn Pro: Highlight the top five keywords you would want to found under in a professional search, Put those keywords in your “Professional Headline” field, your“Title” field and your “Specialties” and “Interests” section.
  • Include your web site and blog links: Add suitable weblinks to the “Websites” section on your LinkedIn profile. This could range from your career blog to your Twitter profile. Alternatively, you can also link to a guest blog post you wrote recently.
  • Make your LinkedIn profile 100% complete: Include all companies, education, and awards. These are the key items on which we recruiters search. References are very important. The more we know about you the better. The more robust your profile, the higher you will be in the Google search rankings. The more information a recruiter has upfront, the more efficient the search process.

Some people are in heavy debate on if you should only friend people who you really know, or try to network with everyone possible. If you do open up your network and get more 1st degree connections it will then open your profile up to even more searches as the profile searches are based off of connections of your LinkedIn connections. There are LinkedIn LIONs who believe that networking with anyone and everyone will help your profile out.

What is Social Media and what can it do for me?

The definition of Social Media from wikipedia

Social media are media for social interaction, using highly accessible and scalable communication techniques. Social media is the use of web-based and mobile technologies to turn communication into interactive dialogue.

So lets focus on the last sentence of the definition, the use of web-based and mobile based technologies to turn communication into interactive dialogue. Social Media was primarily started by MySpace back in 2006, then came Twitter in 2007. Twitter and Myspace were the social media kings for a couple of years while Facebook was still in it’s starting stages. Facebook did not really come to the playing field until they opened up membership to anyone, which to this day has helped grow Facebook to new levels and heights of Social Media.

Enough of the history of Social Media, and now down to the business impacts that Social Media can have for your business or personal brand. In this short post I will outline the main key elements to preparing your brand for the internet and how to market properly. Keep in mind this is all of the stuff that I have learned by searching around the internet trying to better my sites that I run and now want to pass it on to anyone who wants to learn their selves.

Building Your Personal Brand

Personal branding is how we market ourselves to others. It’s a timeless concept. The two reasons why branding has always existed on a person level is that we always have to sell ourselves in various situations, from trying to impress our managers so that we can take on bigger projects, to convincing our friend to see a movie. Also, we’re always being  judged based on first impressions, most of which occur online with a simple Google search. From the clothing you wear, to how you behave and interact with other people, to your body language, everything is tied to your overall brand.

How Businesses use Social Media to Grow Their Brands

Corporations are starting to act more like individuals because consumers demand brand engagement and two-way conversations. That’s why you see employees tweeting and updating their status messages under a corporate umbrella. The same strategies companies use to brand products can be leveraged to brand people, such as blogging, search engine optimization, and press releases.

I will be posting articles going over

  • Twitter/Facebook Fan Pages
  • Search Engine Optimization
  • The Importance of a LinkedIn Profile
  • and much more….
